Our History

First Christian Church has a proud history in this community. The church was started 106 years ago! Not many churches can speak of that kind of consistent presence in a community.

The church was formerly housed in downtown Monroe. The present facility was built in 1986 and was modeled after that downtown facility. Our facility is beautiful and has been the cornerstones of many community weddings.

But as proud as we are of our past, we're even more excited about our future. We meet in a beautiful and traditional facility, but we are an  UN-traditional church. This is a progressive group of people who are committed to serving the community and being the church God put us here to be in Monroe.

Our Affiliation

We are part of the Christian Church or Disciples of Christ denomination. The Mission of the Christian Church is to be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps "to the ends of the earth."     Acts 1:8

The Confession of the Christian Church

As members of the Christian Church, We confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.

The church is identified with the Protestant “mainstream” and is widely involved in social and other concerns. Disciples have supported vigorously world and national programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the developmentally disabled and aid to victims of war and calamity.

An important value of Disciples is the autonomy of the local church.  Each church is completely independent and makes decisions based upon the leadership of the Holy Spirit.  Each church is guided by the leadership of its membership.

The denomination now counts about 700,000 members in the United States and Canada in about 3,700 congregations.
